Judge Mark Bennett to Open 2018

Judge Mark Bennett opens the second year of the Inns of Mediation at our dinner meeting on September 17, 2018, at Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave., Des Moines, IA. Judge Bennett will speak on his perspectives of mediation. There will be a cash bar starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and our program.

Judge Bennett's presentation is “Shocking Truths about Mediation.” Judge Bennett has never been a fan of mediation and will talk about the pros and cons of mediation vs. going to trial based on his more than forty years in the profession trying more than three hundred jury trials in six federal courts spanning the Middle District of Florida to the District of the Northern Mariana Islands and mediating about one hundred cases.

The dinner is open to renewing members of the Inns, and also to members of the public. Tickets can be purchased for $35 per person at Inns of Mediation by clicking on our Shop. Tickets will go on sale on September 5.

Also, all of the dinners are included with Inns of Mediation membership. Membership includes four (4) evening dinners with guest speakers, networking, education programming, along with access to mentoring, student mediation tournaments, both for student participants and mediators as judges. The membership application can also be found on our website. Click the Join button for membership and the Shop button for dues or dinner tickets.

This year's program focuses on education. New this year are opportunities for members and students to participate in student mediation tournaments, for students and young lawyers to mentor with experienced mediators, and educational sessions which include practicing mediation skills.

This year’s program will cover these four topics: Why mediation? Perspectives and Lessons; Prepping for Mediation: Dissecting the Phases of Mediation; and Practicing a Mediation. For those new to mediation, this will be a nuts and bolts introduction. For those with experience, this will be an opportunity to pick up some tips and tricks from experienced practitioners who approach mediation from a number of different perspectives.

The Inns of Mediation is comprised of lawyers, judges, students, members of the community, and other professional mediators who are committed to advancing the principles and awareness of mediation as a means of resolving disputes among parties. The primary goals of the Inn of mediation are not only to train mediators but also to acquaint all segments of society in the use and efficacy of mediation as the primary vehicle to resolve differences.
